Huge congratulations to DCU | STYLE Project Young Designer winner Sophie Murphy! The DCU Fashion Show 2018 took place in The Helix’s Mahony Hall on February 20th, with hosts James Kavanagh & Andrea Horan and the DCU | STYLE crew put on a fantastic show. The theme of this years fashion show was Dystopia vs Utopia. The exploration of these stark opposites was carried out through music and fashion on the night
Sophie’s entry is a look from her first collection which celebrates streetwear style. Inspired by construction worker’s site attire and the rise of the ‘chav’ with, the reappropriation of work wear has a high-fashion urban twist. The candy pink waistcoat, bum-bag and trims are made in a lino fabric which proved difficult to work with due to how thick it was. The coated camouflage fabric is contrasted by a pink faux-fur coat the designer lined with bespoke printed cotton. The end result is in an interesting mashup of contrasting elements with a contemporary work-wear aesthetic.
Sophie is set to graduate in June when she will have completed her second collection which she is currently working. She will further explore the mashing up the disparate influences, subverting classic tartans and the tracksuit for her final collection. We’re excited to see what’s next for Sophie – we’ll keep you posted!
