Are you interested in designing clothes but don't yet have the know-how? Do you wish to delve into the technical aspects of pattern making and sewing? On our one year intensive course you will learn how to design and construct full scale blocks and construct final working patterns, then cut out and sew professionally finished garments.
We pride ourselves on being Europe's only English speaking fashion college with individual attention within a class setting. We offer small scale, personal learning in a supportive environment. Our students each have individual needs and talents which we foster to develop in full.

ESTABLISHED IN 1938

Founded in 1938 the skills taught at Grafton Academy today remain much the same but have been developed and adapted to ensure its longevity whilst preserving age old skills.
The Grafton Academy is recognised as an important educational and development facility for the Irish fashion industry by the Council of Irish Fashion Designers.

What's Involved?

A Brief Outline Of The Elements Covered In The One Year Course

PART 1 The course consists of making blocks for skirts blouses and dresses. The student is shown how to make various styles of skirts. The student will then design and make 3 skirt patterns, one to made in suitable fabric.

PART 2 Shirts are the next part of the course where the student is shown how to make different collars, sleeves and style lines. The student designs three shirts, makes the patterns for all three, then cuts out in suitable fabric and sews one shirt.

PART 3 Dresses are the next part of the course where eight dresses are designed and patterns made up. Two dresses are cut out and sewn up in a non stretch fabric. The two garments are put forward for examination or 'sewing exam'.

PART 4 Following successful completion of PART 3, students will complete 5 weeks of pattern making revision, trying out different dress styles and then undertake a pattern making exam or 'drafting exam' on their last day. Within the academic year students will also complete two fashion design projects for examination and a learning journal. Emphasis on research notebooks, fashion drawing and technical aspects needed for industry.

The 36 weeks covers the academic year, September to June. It is a full time course with the hours of 10.00 - 16.00, Monday to Friday.

On successful completion of this course, students will have an industry recognised qualification, and will have a strong and varied entry level portfolio of Fashion Design work, which may facilitate advanced entry to the Grafton Academy of Fashion Design Diploma as well as entry to a range of other third level courses.

Fee paid in full in advance: €7,800 Fee when paid in installments: €8,100 deposit of €3,500. Balance of €4,600 is payable in eight consecutive monthly instalments of €575.
