TRANSITION YEAR WORKSHOP

The overall aim of the Grafton Academy Workshop is to provide a learning experience to Transition Year students who have an interest in pursuing Fashion Design at 3rd level.

The Workshop offers Transition Year students:

  1. An innovative learning experience introducing students to the basic skills of pattern drafting and sewing.
  2. Learn to construct full scale blocks and modify into final working patterns, toile and modify.
  3. Access to a unique studio environment which is designed to promote creativity and collaborative learning.
  4. Learn from lecturers who are industry professionals with extensive experience and knowledge of working in the fashion industry.
  5. An insight into a 3rd level environment and interaction with 3rd level students and staff.
So that:

  1. They become confident users of the domestic sewing machine.
  2. Grasp the theory of bringing an original design or concept to completion.
  3. They are enthused and inspired to go onto Fashion related 3rd level education.

The Fashion Design Workshop is based at 12 Richmond Row, Portobello in Dublin 8. The TY programme runs from Monday to Friday, from 10.00 to 16.00. During the workshop, the students are given a taste of the Grafton Academy college experience in real time alongside final year students making complete collections. They will see the scope of creativity and imagination involved in the journey to a career in the fashion industry.

The Fashion Design Workshop is based at 12 Richmond Row, Portobello in Dublin 8. The TY programme runs from Monday to Friday, from 10.00 to 16.00.

We ask students to do a minimum of 2 weeks to ensure garments are completely finished which might not be possible in one week.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

An A4 pad, pen, pencil, eraser, plastic set-square (approx. 28cm on the longest side), tape measure, scissors, threads, dressmaking pins, tracing wheel, sellotape. Pattern making paper and bobbins are available to purchase at the Grafton Academy. Fabric, zips etc. is required for making up projects.
